9 Qualities of a Great Leader

Image
The subject of leadership can never be exhausted and that is why there are always books coming out on it. My favorite definition of leadership is from Stephen Covey who said that  “Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves. ”  The responsibility of every leader is to keep affirming the worth and potential of every person in the organization. This will then lead to people performing at their best which gives the organization greater success.  I have identified the key qualities of leaders which I believe can help every leader get better. Not every leader can have all these qualities but an awareness of them can increase the qualities in us. Here are the key qualities of great leaders. Vision Across all the leadership studies done the most important quality of a leader is setting the vision of an organization. As it is often said without vision people perish. Creating an exciting picture abo...

My Happiness Project - 7 Keys to Happiness

Image
I think everyone has one common goal in life and that is to be happy. It has also been well established that you can’t really pursue happiness but rather it is the result of concerted action towards your closely cherished dreams.  Aristotle said  “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” What are the keys to happiness? Happiness has been defined as the progressive realization of a worthy goal which means if you have a predetermined outcome you are working towards then that journey enhances your happiness.  The other key principle to be happy is to not be attached to the outcome yes we should set challenging goals but if the outcome is something different we should be detached and practice acceptance. Another thing I have learned is not to label things as either bad or good. Everything happens for a reason and sometimes we don’t understand why it happened. Only when we attain some distance from the actual event ...

The Seven Traits of the Wealthy Personality

Image
I have read quite a number of books on money and finance. One of them which I liked was Jean Chatzky’s The Difference. It was a wonderful book and it was based on a study which was called the 2008 Merrill Lynch New Retirement Study. The thing I liked about this book is it gave hard core data on how the rich operate and think. There were twenty things identified which was done by the wealthy. Some of them are they felt stocks were worth the risk, they of course devote to personal savings, they save regularly for emergencies, they made it a goal to make a million, they are confident and happy. Of course those are just some of the factors that the wealthy practice. The other section which I want to expand on is the 7 traits that the wealthy people share. Here are the seven traits of a wealthy personality with my take on each. Of course wealth is not everything but knowing what it takes to be one increases our awareness and can help us on our journey towards whatever success we are loo...

5 Books on Success, Happiness, Business and Purpose

Image
Here are a few books I liked reading recently. Reading keeps our mind sharp and it also feeds our inspiration well which can run dry unless we keep filling it with uplifting material. The Warrior Code by Tee Marie Hanible and Denene Millner  – This book will get you inspired for sure. Considering what the author went through in her childhood and then to reach the heights of her profession shows resilience at its best. While the principles are straight forward it does leave you more inspired than you would be without that information. Pulling Profits Out of a Hat by Brad Sugars and Monte Wyatt  – This is one of the best business books of the year for sure. The premise is to focus on strategy, business development, people, execution and mission. For example a simple strategy for Southwest was wheels up that is they will make money only if the planes are in the air. Another example is GE under Jack Welch when they said we will only serve markets in which we can be ...
