10 Ways to Develop Churchillian Resolve
The story of LEGO has always resonated with me, particularly its incredible comeback during challenging times. In the early 2000s, LEGO faced a financial crisis, with declining sales and near bankruptcy. However, the leadership of Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, then CEO, spearheaded a turnaround that leveraged creativity and innovation. LEGO focused on its core mission: fostering creativity in children and families. It invested in its classic products, expanded into digital gaming, and established partnerships with movie franchises like Star Wars.
This is a perfect example of identifying and capitalizing on white-space opportunities. Through strong leadership, accountability, and innovation, LEGO became one of the most profitable and beloved brands globally. I’m inspired by leaders like Knudstorp, who embrace challenges with calmness, take responsibility, and use crises as an opportunity for transformation.
Resilience is truly the signature of greatness. This line comes from Jim Collins in one of my favorite books, Great by Choice. Please read this quote from Churchill: “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
Every great leader worth their salt was resilient. They believed in a cause larger than themselves and defined themselves by impact and contribution. Finding our cause is the main aim of life, in my opinion. Here are 10 Ways to Develop a Churchillian resolve and win from any dire circumstance your find yourself in.
Responsibility
As Harry Truman said, “The buck stops with me.” This is truly the attitude of the visionary leader. Always take responsibility for results. Give praise to the team when things go well and take the blame when things go wrong. This builds credibility within the team, and leaders should understand that trust is everything.
Energy
You must keep your spirits up despite hostile circumstances and tough conditions, and you will be rewarded for your high energy. Take care of your physical body by exercising, maintaining a good diet, and sleeping well. Take care of your mental side by reading, journaling, and being around supportive people. Energy is within our control and is the foundation of resilience.
Savor
When you are going through tough times, the natural response is stress, which can lead to unhappiness. It is during these moments that we must savor our lives and appreciate how far we’ve come. Savoring life boosts happiness and releases pleasure chemicals like serotonin. Taking stock of what we have can shift our perspective toward positivity. Gratitude has shown to boost optimism.
Imagination
Think of alternatives and imagine all possibilities. There is always another way to approach a situation. Reframing the story we tell ourselves when things go wrong can be transformative. Even in the darkest clouds, a silver lining can be found if we actively seek it.
Listen
Listening is critical for understanding and overcoming challenges. Reflect on the situation, journal your thoughts, and discuss them with trusted confidants. Being open to insights—internal and external—can often lead to breakthroughs.
Expectations
Expect the best, but plan for the worst. We seldom rise higher than the expectations we have for ourselves. Great leaders always expect to win, even in the face of adversity. As Vince Lombardi famously said, “We didn’t lose; we just ran out of time.”
Novelty
View setbacks through the lens of novelty. Instead of seeing challenges as repetitions of past failures, look at them as fresh opportunities to learn and grow. Approach each experience as unique, and let it reveal your capabilities.
Class
A career spanning decades requires class. Be kind, say please and thank you, and maintain positive relationships. Difficult times can test our patience, but treating others with dignity and grace builds lasting respect and trust.
Enthusiasm There are 168 hours in a week, and everyone gets the same. Even if you work 50 hours, there’s time left to pursue passions. A full life is one where every moment is embraced with energy. Whether it’s a hobby, travel, reading, or spending time in nature, maintaining enthusiasm ensures smoother navigation through turbulent times.
Resilience
At its core, resilience is about facing challenges with courage and composure. It is a hallmark of greatness that allows us to stay grounded and focused, even amidst chaos. By cultivating resilience, we equip ourselves to thrive no matter the circumstances.
Resilience is indeed the signature of greatness, and we all have the capability to display it. The views expressed in this article are my own and do not represent my organization. Thank you for reading this post.
