The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

There are so many leadership books that we don’t know if there is anything new to be said that hasn’t already been said. The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Pozner is one of the best books on the subject. To become a better leader this is a wonderful resource.
Here are the five practices of exemplary leadership with my take on each.
Model the way:  This is a very important step for everyone on their leadership journey. As a leader this practice is all about defining clearly the values you want to be known for and stand for. Some of the values could be integrity, caring, honesty, courage and passion. Defining your unique values is inspiring and keeps you more fulfilled. Once you define your values it is also adherence to the values that is the key. So, keep measuring yourself against the values you have set. Finally, you can set the organization values as well.
Inspire a shared vision:  Leaders are generally great visionaries. They can dream a better future that does not yet exist. Once you have the vision in place it is important to communicate this to your team. Once the team buys into your vision there will be greater engagement within the organization and everyone will feel more meaning.
Challenge the process:  As a leader, be on the lookout for opportunities. In other words, develop an opportunity mindset and create a blame free culture where risks are welcomed. Embrace failure and ensure people who do make mistakes don’t get reprimanded for trying.
Enable others to act:  Develop your team to take decisions. The job of a leader is to develop other leaders. Encourage people taking ownership for their role in the organization. Be quick to praise others and take responsibility as the leader when things go wrong. Create a culture where people are taking leadership roles.
Encourage the heart:  This is all about recognition of your team for the magnificent work they do. The biggest craving for a human is appreciation. It is truly oxygen to the soul. So, keep praising the team and provide rewards that are appropriate. Build a community of passion and engaged team members who act as leaders.
There you have it all the keys you need to be an outstanding leader in whatever you do.
