The Roadmap on the Success Journey

Success is a wonderful word we all want to be associated with. I like the book “The Success Journey” by John Maxwell. The reason I like it the way the matter of success is dealt with. It is not only about wealth or health.
John Maxwell defined success as knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential and sowing seeds that benefit others. This is a wonderful way to define success and ensures it is not a destination.
I like one chapter which talks about the Road map for success. Each letter of the word has been expanded with my take on each
Recognize your dream – Of course the starting point of success is to determine what your dream is. What is it that you want out of life and what do you want it to stand for. Taking sometime to decide this is the first step on your success journey.
Observe your starting point – If you want to lose weight the first thing you do is weigh yourself. Some of the questions you can ask are how great a distance you have to travel? What do I have working for me? What must I overcome? And what will it cost to make the trip.
Articulate a statement of purpose – Define a mission statement for your life. I have a bigger mission statement but the shorter one is “I want to maximise my potential and help others maximise theirs.” When you have a personal mission your days is filled with joy and excitement.
Define your goals – Goals are truly the fuel that will propel you further in your life. Write down goals for your physical, mental, financial and personal areas of your life. Make it specific, measurable, achievable (just slightly out of reach), realistic and time bound. Look at your goals weekly and assess where you stand.
Move into action – All our fears can be overcome only by taking purposeful action towards the goals you have set for yourself. When you are totally engaged in your life work doesn’t feel like drudgery and you move swiftly between task to task. Action is the hallmark of all great achievers.
Adjust your plans – Of course on all journeys we will face obstacles, delays and downright disappointment. You should plan but not let it rule you. Be flexible and change your plans when opportunity presents itself.
Point to success and celebrate– Once you reach your dream do take some time to enjoy the success and celebrate. Don’t wait for complete success to celebrate. On the journey have some pit stops to smell the roses. This is the only way to be motivated for the success journey.
There you have it the road map to take you wherever you want to go.
